Evaluation of Experimental Rumble Strips Final Report

چکیده

This report was prepared to provide the results of evaluations conducted upon twenty-six roadways where rumble strips were installed experimentally in Louisiana between August 1982 and September 1984. Situated randomly throughout Louisiana, construction of these coarse-textured, exposed sandstone aggregate rumble strips was accomplished by district maintenance forces using conventional asphalt distributing equipment. The purpose of this project was to develop a supplement to typical traffic control devices, such as signs or signalization, where a substantial reduction in speed is required to divert driver inattentiveness towards a potentially hazardous intersection or situation. It was hoped that the audible and tactile stimuli provided by the designated intermittent pattern of the coarse-textured, exposed sandstone aggregate rumble strips would increase driver reaction time, thereby creating the reduction in speed necessary to reinforce or augment standard visual traffic control devices. This report addresses installation techniques/problems, relative aggregate durability, aggregate loss determinations, possible rejuvenation procedures and analyzes historical accident statistics prior to and after installation.

Elevated-Risk Work Zone Evaluation of Temporary Rumble Strips

A field study was conducted on a Missouri low volume road to examine if temporary rumble strips could improve safety in elevated risk work zones. This study complements previous studies by addressing several new issues: vehicles that cross over a lane to bypass strips, physical displacement of strips and deployment of strips at an angle. An objective was to measure performance in a challenging ...

Effectiveness and acceptability of milled rumble strips on rural two-lane roads in Sweden

Purpose The study sought to estimate the effects of centreline milled rumble strips on rural two-lane roads in Sweden in a wide perspective. Traffic safety effects (i.e., fewer crashes and injuries), driver experience, and driver opinions of centreline milled rumble strip usage on rural roads are investigated. Methods To evaluate the traffic safety effects, an Empirical Bayes study comparing th...

Potential crash reduction benefits of shoulder rumble strips in two-lane rural highways.

This paper reports the findings from a study aimed at examining the effectiveness of shoulder rumble strips in reducing run-off-the-road (ROR) crashes on two-lane rural highways using the empirical Bayes (EB) before-and-after analysis method. Specifically, the study analyzed the effects of traffic volume, roadway geometry and paved right shoulder width on the effectiveness of shoulder rumble st...

An Onboard Virtual Rumble-Strip Based Operation for Road Departure Warning

The use of rumble strips on roads has proven to be an effective means of providing drivers road departure warning (RDW). However, rumble strips require an infrastructure and do not exist on a majority of roadways. Furthermore, rumble strips presents a difficult issue of where to establish the rumble-strip distance threshold. The research proposed will explore the development of an onboard elect...

Rumble Strips in Centre of the Lane

The aim of this study was to describe the effects of sleep loss on behavioural and subjective indicators of sleepiness on a road containing a milled rumble strip in the centre of the lane. Particular attention was paid to behavioural and subjective indicators of sleepiness when using the centre lane rumble strip, and to possible erratic driving behaviour when hitting a rumble strip. In total 9 ...
